Funding statement

1. Introduction and scope

Afield is a grant-making charity, established by Liz Orton and Mike Saunders in 2025 from a family legacy, with the purpose of supporting creative responses to environmental injustice.

Due to its ability to call on an endowment, Afield does not fundraise. All of our activity is in pursuit of charitable aims, for public benefit and regulated by the Charity Commission.

We recognise the privilege that the founders and trustees have in this position, and we commit to using the charity’s resources to fund people experiencing environmental injustice, which we understand as inseparable from social and economic injustice.

2. Funding

All of our funding comes from a family legacy. The endowment was originally generated through a property business.

We work alongside a fund manager to ensure that the endowment is invested ethically in line with our values. It is managed using exclusion criteria. There is no direct or indirect investment (via pooled funds) in any companies that:

  • Manufacture or trade arms or weapons
  • Engage in growing or trading tobacco
  • Create or market pornography
  • Extract or refine fossil fuels
  • Do harm to animals
  • Are part of the gambling industry
  • Have links to supply chains involving human rights violations, slavery and child labour

The fund managers also invest in funds that are guided by Environmental, Social and Governance principles.

We acknowledge that the way this wealth was generated has played a part in creating injustice and continues to do so. We are also aware that the current model of wealth creation needs to change to address the urgent challenge of climate change and inequality.

3. Banking

We hold our current and savings accounts with the Co-operative Bank.

4. Review

Afield Co-founders meet with the fund manager at least every six months, and trustees will review the policy itself every year.
